Trio Orpheus presents the first piano trio works by three composers. In 1842—a year he regarded as his “year of chamber music”—Robert Schumann explored the possibilities of the piano trio in the four early pieces that comprise his Phantasiestücke (Fantasy Pieces), Op. 88. At the age of 18, inspired by P.I. Tchaikovsky and his famous trio, Sergei Rachmaninoff composed his first Élégiaque Trio in G minor, a single-movement work characterized by intense dramatic elements. While recovering from tuberculosis at a sanatorium in Crimea at the age of 16, Dmitri Shostakovich fell in love with Tatiana Glivenko, to whom he dedicated his first piano trio: the single-movement Trio in C minor, Op. 8.
