Dr. Caligari’s Workshop is undoubtedly one of the most iconic works of German expressionism and world cinema in general. The film, with its distinctive aesthetic and innovative use of light and shadow, has left an indelible mark, influencing many contemporary directors and screenwriters, such as the well-known American director Tim Burton.
The live musical accompaniment by the inventive and multifaceted pianist and composer Stathis Anninos adds a new dimension to the screening, enhancing the film’s already intense atmosphere.
His original compositions and improvisations create psychedelic soundscapes and unexpected musical combinations that imaginatively complement and enrich the visual aspect, offering the audience an exciting experience.
Stathis Anninos is a restless and prolific musician from Athens, who has loved music since he was a child. His parents were amateur musicians, so his childhood home was filled with a rich variety of sounds.
He graduated from the Ilion Music School with a diploma in classical piano and advanced music theory. He has attended seminars on classical and jazz music and improvisation by distinguished Greek and foreign musicians, and after obtaining his piano diploma, he studied under Takis Farazis.
At the same time, he teaches seminars in Greece and Cyprus, with a particular emphasis on improvisation and its connection to classical music.
As a pianist and arranger, he has collaborated with renowned artists such as Dionysis Savvopoulos, Nikos Xydakis, E. Reboutsika, as well as with important musicians such as Giorgos Kaloudis, Giotis Kiourtzoglou, Vangelis Karipis, and others.
He has collaborated with popular actors such as Karyofyllia Karabeti, Christos Loulis, Giorgos Kentros, and Nikos Psaras. He composed music for the short films No One and Monsters (Nikos Kourou). He accompanied live silent film screenings at the Athens Concert Hall Garden: The Lodger (1927) by Alfred Hitchcock and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) by Robert Wiene, with Dimitris Klonis and Raphael Meletea. He has collaborated with the ERT Contemporary Music Orchestra, the Athens Quartet (KOA), and Camerata, and has worked with the ERT Contemporary Music Orchestra, the Athens Quartet (KOA), and Camerata.

In 2022, he released his personal album Anthology, while in 2025 he released Mη Φοβάσαι (N. Xydakis, M. Rasouli) and Norwegian Wood (Beatles) with the Stathis Anninos Quartet and Greek-Brazilian singer Katerina Polemi from PKmusic.
